Battery or nano broken?

It's ?BBQ season, so 've fished out my wlanthermo nano out of it's hibarnation in house, where it slpet with a fullly charged battery last season. charged it fully until the display says laden beendet.
but it won't turn on anymore. plugging the cable in, it says "low battery, please switch off"

so is the battery broken (which should be after so many years) or should the nano still work powered by a charger/ power bank too even with a faiked battery? what's the recommended action? replace the battery?

Does the red charging LED light up when you plug in a USB device? If so, please let the Nano charge for 3-4 hours.
Does the red LED go out? Can it be startet now? If not, the battery is probably broken.
Open the case and cut the battery cables. Your Nano should then boot up with a connected USB device.

I'm still waiting for the replacement battery, but wanted to try to do wiwthout batteries. for others with this problem just cutting the cables does not let it boot through USB initially. it will say battery charging ended at first, and turning it on it would say low battery. in order for it to work you have to turn it on before plugging a usb powerbank. took a few tries to figure that out.

Normally, the thermometer should start without a battery even if it's already connected to a USB source. In your case, there seems to be some residual voltage on the ESP32 contact, which is triggering the "faulty" detection. This could be a coincidence, but it could also indicate a fault with the charging IC. After installing the new battery, please check that it's charging properly the first time you charge it.
